🌍 Class 8 Science
Chapter 13: Our Home: Earth, a Unique Life Sustaining Planet Based on NCERT "Curiosity" (2024). Simple notes for easy learning. Not a textbook replacement.

📋 What is Inside

📝 Section 1 — Topic Notes

🌍 Real-World Analogy: Earth is like a perfectly built spacecraft! It carries exactly the right amount of air to breathe, water to drink, and stays at just the right temperature for life. No other planet in our Solar System has all three at once — Mars is too cold and dry, Venus is too hot. When we pollute our air and water, it is like punching holes in our spacecraft's life-support system. Taking care of Earth means keeping our spacecraft fit to live in!

What Makes Earth Special EARTH Air We can breathe Water We can drink Right Heat Not too hot or cold

Diagram 1: Earth Has Air, Water, and the Right Temperature for Life

Layers of the Atmosphere Troposphere (We live here!) Weather happens here. 0-12 km. Stratosphere (Ozone layer!) Blocks harmful sun rays. 12-50 km. Mesosphere Burns up space rocks. 50-80 km. Thermosphere Very hot but very thin. 80-700 km. Exosphere Edge of space. 700+ km. EARTH SURFACE Higher and Higher →

Diagram 2: Five Layers of Air Around Earth

Three Types of Pollution Air Pollution Causes: Factory smoke Car exhaust Burning trash Effects: Hard to breathe Lung problems Fix: Plant trees! Water Pollution Causes: Factory waste Garbage in rivers Chemicals Effects: Fish die People get sick Fix: Keep water clean! Soil Pollution Causes: Plastic waste Too many chemicals Pesticides Effects: Plants die Food not safe Fix: Use less plastic!

Diagram 3: Air, Water, and Soil Pollution — Causes, Effects, and Fixes

The Greenhouse Effect SUN sends heat Heat comes in Earth Surface Greenhouse Gases (CO2, Methane) Some heat escapes Heat trapped! Too much trapped heat = Global Warming!

Diagram 4: How Greenhouse Gases Trap Heat and Warm the Earth

The 3 R's: Save Earth! REDUCE Use less. Turn off lights. Save water. REUSE Use it again. Carry a cloth bag. Reuse old jars. RECYCLE Make new from old. Old paper → new paper. Old glass → new glass. Result: A Cleaner Earth! Less garbage in the ground. Cleaner air and water for all. Animals and plants stay safe.

Diagram 5: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — Three Steps to Save Earth

🧩 Section 3 — Solved Examples

🌍 Example 1: Why is Earth Special?

Mars has no liquid water. Venus is very hot. Why can life exist only on Earth?

1
Earth has air to breathe.
2
Earth has liquid water to drink.
3
Earth is not too hot or cold.
4
Mars and Venus do not have all three.
Answer: Earth has air, water, and the right temperature. No other planet has all three, so only Earth supports life.

🔥 Example 2: Global Warming

A factory releases lots of CO2 gas. How does this harm Earth?

1
CO2 is a greenhouse gas.
2
It traps heat from the sun.
3
More CO2 means more trapped heat.
4
Earth gets warmer. Ice melts. Seas rise.
Answer: CO2 traps heat in the atmosphere. This causes global warming, which melts ice and raises sea levels.

♻️ Example 3: Using the 3 R's

Meena uses a new plastic bag every day. How can she help Earth?

1
Reduce: Use fewer plastic bags.
2
Reuse: Carry a cloth bag instead.
3
Recycle: Give old plastic for recycling.
4
Small steps make a big difference.
Answer: Meena should reduce plastic use, reuse a cloth bag, and recycle old plastic. This helps keep Earth clean.

✅ Detailed Solutions — Section 5 Practice

Part A — Fill in the Blanks (Answers)

1. Earth has air, water, and the right temperature.
2. The atmosphere is the air around Earth.
3. Smoke from factories causes air pollution.
4. The ozone layer blocks harmful sun rays.
5. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle are the 3 R's.

Part B — True or False (Answers)

1. True. Earth is the only planet known to have life — it has air, water and the right temperature.
2. False. Factory smoke makes air dirty (polluted), not clean.
3. True. The ozone layer absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun before they reach us.
4. False. Plastic does not break down quickly — it can last hundreds of years in soil.
5. False. Global warming makes Earth warmer, not cooler.

Part C — Short Answer (Answers)

1. Three things that make Earth special: Air (for breathing), Water (for drinking and life), and the right temperature (not too hot, not too cold).
2. The greenhouse effect: greenhouse gases (like CO₂) in the atmosphere act like a blanket, trapping the Sun's heat. When we add too many greenhouse gases by burning fuels, the blanket gets thicker and Earth heats up — this is global warming.
3. Reduce: switch off lights when leaving a room. Reuse: use cloth bags instead of new plastic bags each time. Recycle: send old newspapers to a paper mill to make new paper.

Part D — Match the Columns (Answers)

1 → b (Air pollution = factory smoke)
2 → e (Water pollution = waste in rivers)
3 → c (Ozone = blocks UV rays)
4 → a (Greenhouse gas = CO₂)
5 → d (Recycle = make new from old)

🔄 Section 6 — Flip & Learn Cards

What makes Earth special?
Earth has air, water, and the right temperature for life.
What is the atmosphere?
The blanket of air around Earth. It has many layers.
